OSMOSIS
A dictionary definition of Osmosis is "the passage of a solvent through a semi-permeable membrane into a lower concentrated solution".

When GRP (fibreglass) yachts were first introduced people thought they were practically impermeable to all forms of rot. This theory has subsequently been proved wrong with the occurrence of osmotic style degradation of the GRP which the hull is made up from.

+ What is Osmosis & How Is It Caused?

When two liquids with different concentrations are separated by a semi-permeable membrane one liquid will penetrate the membrane in an effort to equalize the difference in concentration. During this process the volume of the most concentrated solution will increase and a pressure can develop.

+ Does My Boat Have Osmosis?

The first visual signs of osmosis will be the formation of blisters in the gel coat. If you pierce an osmotic blister the liquid content will have a sour smell similar to vinegar. The problem may be discovered prior to its visual symptoms appearing by checking the moisture content of the hull with a moisture meter. At this stage professional advice should be sought to determine the degree of the problem and the future action. Ferry Marine is an Approved Osmosis Treatment Centre for Blakes & International paints and we can assist you with any osmosis related problems you may have.

+ Can I Help Prevent My Boat From Getting Osmosis?

Yes..............Steps can be taken to help prevent osmosis occurring. Blakes and International both have products that can be applied to a sound hull to protect it from the occurrence of osmosis and can be applied at a fraction of the cost of a full osmosis repair job. We can carry out this work for you or if you wish to carry out the job yourself we can supply you with the products you will need and our knowledge of course is always....... free. Don't wait until you have the problem take action now and save yourself hundreds of pounds.
